Eurocrisis, Refugee crisis, Panama Papers. The EU is in deep crisis but in many EU member states the right wing is advancing not the left. How should the Left approach the crisis of European democracies?
The Panama papers are the most recent revelation of a web of thievery and corruption amongst the rich and the powerful. After the Eurocrisis and last year’s attacks on Greece, Europe seems more than ever divided between a few rich people who profit, and the 99% who have to pay.
In the weeks following the release of the Panama Papers, Fabio De Masi MEP has been one of the most articulate critics of the organised criminality of the rich and the powerful. He has also been working with Oscar Lafontaine, Jean Luc Melenchon, Stefano Fassina and others in developing Plan B, an alternative to neoliberal Europe.
Does the left have a credible alternative to the EU crisis? Yannis Varoufakis calls for more democracy? Is more democracy enough, and if so how can it be won? What are the concrete next steps towards building a Europe which acts in the interests of all its members not just a small élite? Is the EU a help or hindrance to creating such a society?
Fabio will be discussing these and other questions at the May meeting of die LINKE Berlin AG Internationals, Thursday 26 May at 7pm in Karl Liebknecht Haus (Kleine Alexanderstraße 28 on Rosa Luxemburg Platz).
The meeting will be largely in English with translation into German if required. People of all nationalities and opinions (except Nazis) are invited to take part in the debate. Note that because of Fabio’s schedule in Brussels, this meeting will be on a Thursday (not a Tuesday as usual)
