There’s quite a lot coming up in the next few weeks, so here’s a summary of some of the places where you can find people from our group. For a longer list, go to https://theleftberlin.wordpress.com and look at “Coming Events” in the right-hand column. If you know of meetings that are missing from *that* list (and there’s so much going on at the moment, not everything will be there) let us know what you think we should mention.
- BLOCKUPY CONFERENCE
Blockupy is the anti-capitalist alliance that was set up to organise protests outside the European C Central Bank in Frankfurt. Last year, Blockupy organised several actions in solidarity with Greece. Next week-end it has a conference in Berlin to discuss perspectives and actions for the coming year. Yannis Varoufakis (who is in Berlin next week, see below) has threatened to attend.
The conference starts on Friday, 5th February at 7.30pm, with a discussion on refugees. There will be workshops on Saturday between 11am and 6pm and on Sunday between 9.30am and 5pm. All meetings will be in the Technical University (Straße des 17. Uni, U-Bahn Zoo or Ernst-Reuter Platz, S-Bahn Tiergarten or Zoo).
DIE LINKE will have a stall at the conference and is looking for people to help. Please contact us or lydia.will[at]linksfraktion.de. The Blockupy alliance is also looking for translators (English <-> German). If you can help, please enter your details at https://titanpad.com/ZImTqvma1p.
At the conference we will be giving out our new leaflet, which you can find here: https://theleftberlin.wordpress.com/2016/02/01/our-new-flyer-for-february-2016/.
- YANNIS VAROUFAKIS IN BERLIN, 9 FEBRUARY
On Tuesday, 9 February Yannis Varoufakis will be presenting his new Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 project in the Volksbühne, where he will be joined by a frankly impressive list of international speakers.
IT IS STILL POSSIBLE TO GET INTO THIS MEETING
There will be some tickets available on the evening. The Volksbühne will also be beaming the meeting live to the Grüner Salon. The meeting starts at 8.30pm.
Topsy and I have been commissioned by Philosophy Football in Britain to write a report of the meeting, which we will also be publishing on our Website http://www.theleftberlin.wordpress.com/.
- OUR NEXT PUBLIC MEETING
Will be in the Karl Liebknecht Haus KIZ on Tuesday, 23rd February at 7pm, where the main discussion will be on women’s rights and racism after Cologne.
- ORGANISING MEETINGS
We also have a monthly organising meeting on the third Thursday of each month, where we concentrate less on discussion and more on the activities of our group. The meetings are open to anyone who is interested. This year, these meetings will take place in different local offices of DIE LINKE (at the next meeting we’ll decide where we’ll meet when).
The next meeting will be on Thursday, 18th February in the offices of DIE LINKE Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf (Behaimstraße 17, U-Bahn Richard-Wagner Platz). The main discussion will be a report from die LINKE Berlin dayschool about the manifesto for the coming Berlin elections. We will discuss the current manifesto proposal (if you are interested we can send you the current version) and whether we want to propose any amendments.
We will also be discussing other projects of our group, a couple of which are listed below, the text for our new flyer, and the slogan for our new banner (please make your suggestions at https://theleftberlin.wordpress.com/2016/01/19/new-banner/).
- OUR WEBSITE
Stephen and Justin will be meeting very soon and will be organising a meeting for anyone who is interested in helping with our website. In addition, 2 new sets of pages have recently appeared on the Website:
- Projects we support: https://theleftberlin.wordpress.com/projects-we-support/
This is projects that we do not organise ourselves, but we think are a good thing. So far, we have pages for 2 projects:
- Forced Walks – a commemoration in Niedersachsen organised by British relatives and friends of the Holocaust survivor Esther Brunstein: https://theleftberlin.wordpress.com/forced-walks/
- Shower Guest – an initiative set up by occasional group member Gal to offer showers to refugees in Berlin: https://theleftberlin.wordpress.com/projects-we-support/project-shower-guest-welcoming-refugees-to-berlin/
We’d like to add more projects to this list. If you know of anything we should be supporting, please get in touch.
A collection of film reviews and articles about culture.
This year, we will be posting monthly film previews on this page, including one for “Suffragette”, in time for the German release on Thursday.
- SOAPBOX PICTURES
Introducing our newest project – showing a new film in a real cinema followed by an interview with the director or someone involved in making the film. We are currently finalizing the plans, but keep the evening of Friday 11th March free, where we want to start the new film series with a film celebrating international women’s day.
Speaking of which….
- INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

We are also taking part in the LINKE women’s conference at the same week-end: http://www.die-linke.de/politik/frauen/bundesfrauenkonferenz/bundesfrauenkonferenz-2016/).
